The following dragon stories are independent entries for DragonVale World and were not part of an in-game event. Each one was an addition to a trait or classification: Zodia, Void, Zen, Mech, and Fairy. The Ophiuchia dragon was the culmination of a twelve dragon collection based on the zodiac signs and therefore had an origin story divulging its backstory and evolution.

My development of these stories included developing the episodic narratives, creating the dragon name and persona, and fitting the lore with other entrants to the same trait. In the case of Ophiuchia, I directed the experience from mysterious teaser to grand entrance and even its persistent in-park behavior. I also named the newly introduced traits Mech and Void.

Ophiuchia Dragon
The 13th Zodia

The Zodia Scrolls tell the story of twelve dragons extracted from the cosmos but there is a thirteenth:

A hatchling once observed it didn’t have wings while other dragons did. During the day, it stared at the clouds and at night, it gazed at the stars. One morning, this dragon awoke to a gift beyond its dreams. Two wings as large as waterfalls had sprouted from its back.

The dragon’s delight yielded to determination. Every waking moment, this dragon practiced flying until it had mastered the skill. On a particularly clear night, the dragon became entranced by the stars and took flight. It rocketed straight up with eyes set on the twinkling lights.

It broke through to the dark space above and became weightless. It could not breathe and it could not fly. As stark reality set in, a glowing blue orb became visible. It seemed far from the dragon, but it grew. The asteroid was on a collision course with the helpless creature but it whizzed by without contact.

Blue radiation blanketed the cringing dragon and its wings disintegrated. It let out a roar that echoed for eternity but realized it could breathe again. It could even fly with the absence of wings.

As it cruised around with glee, it incidentally made contact with many stars. Circling back, it saw twelve dragons floating in front of bright, bold constellations. Having created celestial life, the mother dragon remained among the stars to guide it to the safety of the Surface.

Lorebrarians named these dragons after their cosmic counterparts and bestowed the mother dragon with the name Ophiuchia.

Echo Dragon
The Youthful Union of Cavern Knowledge, or YUCK as most of the members call it, is a group of aspiring students focused on exploring subterranean ecosystems.  During one outing, the club discovered a small dragon hanging upside down from a cave ceiling. They all took out scrolls to capture an image of the inverted sleeping creature. One witch cleared her throat before reciting an incantation, but the dragon awoke from the gutteral noise and took flight. It danced in tight circles around everyone’s head.

“Imaginarium Dragonarium!” the first witch shouted while trying to aim her scroll at the manic flyer. A bright flash filled the cavern and an image slowly appeared on the parchment, but it was a close-up of her fellow club member. The rest of the union cast the same spell at the fluttering target. Each and every scroll ended up with an image of rocks, clothing, or just plain darkness.

When the union returned to Lillian, they described the bumbling incident which peaked the lorebrarian’s interest. She surmised that this mysterious dragon deserved a name regardless of visual proof and blurted out, “Echo!”

Ronin Dragon

In her pursuit of the strongest habitat, Gretchen journeyed several days looking for the perfect rock. When she finally found it, she drew her hammer back and gave it a hearty hack. The stone remained whole and a snorting snicker was heard. Gretchen turned around to see a stoic Ronin dragon sitting still on a perch. She ignored it and looked for a fault in the rock. She placed a piton in the crevice and drew her tool back for another strike. The hammer hit with almost no sound, yet reverberations were sent back into Gretchen’s body. Ronin stepped from its perch and, in one motion, sliced the boulder from top to bottom with its pristine tail. Ronin turned around and sat back on its perch.

Gretchen scoffed, looking at the line the dragon etched. As Gretchen turned to Ronin to say something, she heard a cracking sound. The rock had been split cleanly down the middle. Ronin bowed to the astonished Gretchen.

Tock Dragon

For those inclined to be tardy, a joke awaits them at their destination. Someone always remarks, “Need a new Tock dragon?” These predictable lecturers don’t realize that Tock dragons are no help at all to sleepy surfacefolk. In fact, these dragons fly tirelessly day and night, undeterred by any impediment. The last thing they would do is sit around waiting for the sun to rise, just to rouse a layabout.

Sprite Dragon

This dragon has a peculiar head. It has been said, that this head, spouts the most ridiculous banter. The problem is, a meticulous canter can be the downfall of an inane jester, whose primary joy will only fester. Tricks are its mainstay, jokes are plain play. Sprite dragon’s head is floating, but don’t fret: it won’t stray.
